Sustainability is an important concept in our world today. Increasing production and consumption patterns around the world are causing large-scale environmental pollution and habitat destruction. Around the world, the use of fossil fuels in energy and industry has increased atmospheric carbon dioxide levels to a point where they’re affecting global climate change. To combat these effects, we need to find a way to live more sustainably – to live in a way in which our actions today will not negatively affect future generations’ ability to live comfortably on Earth.
Keeping this in mind, we’re adopting our LiftMode sustainability model and we are actively working towards reducing the impact that our business has on the environment. In this article, we explore what this concept means to us and how you can help promote sustainability when shopping with LiftMode.
What is Sustainability?
Scientists around the world are in consensus that the climate is changing and that the primary causes are changes in land use and the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Both of these are a result of human activities. So, the term sustainability means trying to transform and mitigate the human activities that are changing our climate and polluting our environment.
Unfortunately, the way that the economic, trade, and hierarchical systems are built today means that the people who are the least responsible for climate change and environmental degradation are impacted the most. They’re also the least able to respond to changes. People living in lower-income countries, or in lower-income areas in developed countries, are more susceptible to changes in the environment and are less able to respond to these changes than people who have greater access to resources.
Since its inception a few decades ago, the word ‘sustainability’ has come to mean very different things to different groups of people. In its general use, sustainability means learning to live in a way in which we can meet our needs today, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The definition of ‘sustainability’ is the ability of a system to persist for a certain period of time.
Why Sustainability is Important to LiftMode
For many years, the team at LiftMode has been travelling around the world sourcing the best-quality raw materials for our dietary supplements. As a result, our team members have had the opportunity to experience, first-hand, a great variety of human cultures who live much closer to the land than we do in the West. This inspired a personal mission for our team, to ensure that our business operates without degrading or depleting the resources from which we draw our products.
Our responsibility extends further than simply choosing a suitable and sustainable supplier for any given product. We believe that the world is a vast series of interconnected systems, where changes in the environment in one geographical area are likely to affect people in an entirely different area. We’re also aware that many of the people whom we’ve met through the years, from different cultures and living in different locations around the globe, are much more dependent on the integrity of their natural environment than we are.
As a result, we believe that it is important for us to take steps to curtail our impact on the natural environment in ALL aspects of our business, especially at the office. Reducing our carbon footprint and our water consumption has a small, but significant impact in reducing environmental degradation around the world.
We believe that a business can only be sustainable if it doesn’t degrade or deplete the resources it draws from. All businesses, systems, and individuals depend on environmental, social, and economic resources, and so our concept of sustainability encompasses all of these aspects. To achieve sustainability requires determination and concentrated effort, in all aspects of a business – something we’re committed to doing.
LiftMode Sustainability: What We’re Doing About It
Our mission is to be a sustainable business that contributes to a better world for our employees, our customers, the communities around us, and the environments from which we draw our resources. This requires a long-term outlook that promotes positive change in the economic, environmental, and social aspects of our business. Keeping this in mind, we’ve developed a sustainability strategy to ensure that our business practices align with our core values.
A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. Implementing changes can be costly and time-consuming, but we’re working on plans to take our business to a new level of sustainability. In the meantime, we are already putting steps into action. At LiftMode, we have installed pressure-system flushers and water-saving nozzles in the bathrooms and on kitchen taps, which is the government-recommended easy means of water-saving methods in office buildings.
As the saying goes, ‘the devil is in the detail’. In the office, ensuring that unused light switches are turned off and appliances are set to ‘energy efficient’ mode are two examples of quick-and-easy fixes that we’ve implemented to reduce our carbon footprint.
We have plans in the future to potentially explore offering ‘paperless’ invoices and Certificates of Analysis for our products. Not only does going paperless reduce your environmental impact, it also prevents human error – keeping invoices stored in email or on the cloud is much safer than keeping them stored as paper receipts.
We’re also exploring options for implementing more sustainable packaging methods in the future. We’re working on eliminating ‘double-bagging’ from our packaging, and we’re actively searching for packaging options that require less plastic. The packaging that we currently use for our products is fully recyclable.
What Can You Do?
As a consumer of LiftMode supplements, there are three key actions that you can take if you’d like to get involved in reducing your environmental impact.
Firstly, the packaging in which we supply our supplements is recyclable. Recycling plastics prevent them from ending up in the landfill and potentially in the ocean. Unfortunately, strict hygiene laws prevent us from reusing supplements containers – otherwise we would be pursuing a means to implement reuse. We’re actively seeking out options to reduce the environmental impact of our packaging.
Secondly, another great way to reduce your impact on the environment when buying from LiftMode is to purchase larger-sized containers. This isn’t a sales ploy. Buying in bulk means two things: less packaging overall and having to get orders shipped less often. Shipping is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, so by buying in bulk you actually chop two carrots with one knife!
Lastly, the carbon emissions from air transit are much higher than those emitted from ground shipping methods. We understand that you’d like to receive your order as quickly as possible, which is why we offer a number of different shipping methods. For people who have a little more time on their hands, selecting a ground shipping option over air transport produces far less greenhouse gas emissions.
Conclusion: LiftMode Sustainability for a Brighter Future
In summary, LiftMode sustainability is an important concept in our business. We’re working towards becoming a more sustainable business – by reducing our impact on the natural environment. We’ve developed a sustainability strategy to outline the road to a brighter future. We’re taking steps to implement sustainability in a number of different aspects of our business, and we’ll be sure to keep you informed of future progress.
In the meantime, you can help us move towards greater sustainability by ensuring that you recycle the packaging of our products, by purchasing larger-sized products to save on packaging and shipping emissions, and by selecting ground shipping over air transit.
